These are not arranged accordingly. However these are some of my all time favorite crime/gangster flicks. There’s a few bunch more I have in mind but it would be dang too long of a list. So here are a few of em’ enjoy!

1. The Godfather

Starts at Connie’s wedding, the Godfather is granting various favours. Michael turns up with Kay – back from the war. Small sub plot where Jonny Fontaine asks for a favour, and the Godfather’s advisor/lawyer/adopted son Hagen goes to the house of Woltz a film producer and is very persuasive on Jonny’s behalf – including chopping up his favourite horse. Winds its way onto Sollozzo, a Turk asking for a narcotics deal from the Godfather, he is refused. He’s working with the Barzini family. Luca Brazi goes to find out info, is murdered. Oldest Barzini son is murdered, attempt on Godfather’s life. Michael kills Sollozzo and the bent copper helping him. Goes to Sicily to hide, meets a wife. Meanwhile, Sonny is murdered on his way to see Carlos who keeps beating up Connie. Michael’s wife is killed in Sicily after Michael’s whereabouts are discovered by his enemies. Michael comes home, the Godfather dies of a heart attack, Michael is Godfather to Connie and Carlos’ son. Michael orchestrates the murders of the heads of the five families. Kills Carlos for his part in Sonny’s murder, and Tessio (a bodyguard) for being a traitor to the Brazini family. Michael is the new Godfather.

2. The Usual Suspects

Brought together by an unkown power in order to band together to commit a crime for a mythical figure called Keyser Soze. The film follows them through this crime narrated by Kevin Spacey as Verbal Kint one of the group.

3. Goodfellas

The movie is about Henry Hill (Liotta), a local boy turned gangster in a neighborhood full of the roughest and toughest. There is also Tommy Devito (Pesci), a pure bred gangster, who turns out to be Henry’s best friend. And Jimmy Conway (De Niro), the man who puts the two of them together, and runs some of the biggest hijacks and burglaries the town has ever seen. After an extended jail sentence, Henry must sneak around the back of the local mob boss, Paulie Cicero (Sorvino), to live the life of luxury he has always dreamed of. In the end, the friends end up in a hell of a jam, and must do anything they can to save each other, and stay alive.

4. Training Day

Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke) wants to become a LAPD narc agent, stop narcs from selling drugs on the streets. But that might be hard as he works with LAPD narc agent Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington) for the next 24 hours. Alonzo is an LAPD veteran who has been working the narcs for over a decade, but his ways and techniques of becoming a narc agent are questionable, if not corrupt. As the 24 hours go by, Jake observes Alonzo’s methods, and in the madness, Jake tries to solve all the twists and turns, trying to figure out who really is the enemy here.

5. Scarface

Tony Montana (Al Pacino) and his friend Manny come to America from Cuba during the “Criminal Wave” to Florida. After handling a few odd jobs they start in the business of selling cocaine. The two friends work their way to the top, but make a few enemies along the way.

6. L.A. Confidential

L.A. Confidential is set in 1950’s Los Angeles is the seedy backdrop for this intricate noir-ish tale of police corruption and Hollywood sleaze. When someone’s killing imprisoned mob boss Mickey Cohen’s gang. Three very different cops are all after the truth, each in their own style: Ed Exley (Guy Pearce), the golden boy of the police force, willing to do almost anything to get ahead, except sell out; Bud White (Russel Crowe), ready to break the rules to seek justice, but barely able to keep his raging violence under control; and Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey), always looking for celebrity and a quick buck until his conscience drives him to join Exley and White down the one-way path to find the truth behind the conspiracy of the shotgun slayings of the patrons at an all-night diner which may connected to the slayings of Cohen’s gang members and maybe a lot more.

7. American Gangster

American Gangster tells the true story of Frank Lucas and Richie Roberts. Denzel Washington plays Lucas, a heroin kingpin who rose to power during the Vietnam War era by smuggling drugs into the US and distributing at unusual prices. Russell Crowe plays Roberts, the honest cop who is bent on bringing down Lucas’ drug empire.

8. Snatch

Turkish and his close friend/accomplice Tommy get pulled into the world of match fixing by the notorious Brick Top. Things get complicated when the boxer they had lined up gets the shit kicked out of him by Brad Pitt, a ‘pikey’ ( slang for an Irish Gypsy)- who comes into the equation after Turkish, an unlicensed boxing promoter wants to buy a caravan off the Irish Gypsies. They then try to convince Pitt not only to fight for them, but to lose for them too. Whilst all this is going on, a huge diamond heist takes place, and a fistful of motley characters enter the story, including ‘Cousin Avi’, ‘Boris The Blade’, ‘Franky Four Fingers’ and ‘Bullet Tooth Tony’. Things go from bad to worse as it all becomes about the money, the guns, and the damned dog!

9. Menace II Society

The story follows a young man (Caine) in the city streets of L.A. Despite numerous attempts by Caine’s Grandparents and Caine’s friends father (Roc) to gear him in the right direction, Caine makes wrong decisions due to the more dominant and negative influences in his life (his homeboys lead by the character of Larenz Tate). The audience is left with the inevitable “what if” feeling at the end of the movie. Sometimes, just because Caine wants to do the “right thing” doesn’t mean that he ends up doing so.

10. Boyz N The Hood

Tre and Ricky are Black teenagers growing up in the violent neighborhoods of South-Central Los Angeles. Tre lives with his non-nonsense father, Furious, and this strong male presence in his life is integral in keeping him on the right path. He is a good student on track to go to college. Ricky has no such close male authority figure in his life guiding him and is further hampered by the influence of his brother Doughboy, who is a full participant in the violent gang lifestyle and is constantly in and out prison. But Ricky is a trying to do right, and experiences a positive countering influence in being around Tre and Furious. Though Ricky is not as solid academically as Tre, he is a gifted football player and will be able to attend USC on a football scholarship if he can just get his SAT scores high enough to qualify for admission.

But can these two young men really remain separate from the gang violence that surrounds them every day?
